WebsiteMaine Medical Marijuana Program

Maine’s Medical Marijuana Program was signed into law in 1999 after being passed by voter referendum. Once a patient is certified to use medical cannabis in Maine, they are issued two cards. A certification card which allows them to legally purchase and possess medical cannabis, and a designation card that is left with their dispensary or caregiver for as long as they choose to purchase medical cannabis through that provider. Maine medical cannabis patients are allowed to access their medical marijuana through one of eight state licensed dispensaries or a registered caregiver. Maine patients also have the option to grow up to six flowering female plants themselves, should they choose to instead of going through a provider. Under the Maine Medical Marijuana Program, patients are allowed to purchase and possess up to 2.5 ounces of medical cannabis every fifteen days. They may not purchase more than five ounces of medical cannabis in a 30 day period. This includes any combination of prepared flower, edibles, tincture, oil, and/or salve. The Maine Medical Marijuana Program also offers reciprocity to certified out-of-state patients provided they have a valid medical marijuana certification from their home jurisdiction, a Maine approved medical marijuana certification form completed by the issuing doctor in their home state, AND a valid driver’s license or state ID from the state the original certification was issued in. Qualified patients are not required to register with the state upon receiving their medical marijuana certification.
