Qualifying for a Medical Cannabis Card in Massachusetts

• A resident of Massachusetts
• At least 18 years old*

What are the qualifying conditions for medical cannabis in Massachusetts?

In Massachusetts, there’s an extensive list of conditions that may qualify you for medical marijuana certification. 

However, you may qualify even if you don’t have one of the conditions listed. The law states that patients with other symptoms may qualify, as long as a certifying provider determines that medical cannabis is right for the patient.

How can I get a medical cannabis card in Massachusetts?

The first step is to obtain a certification through a healthcare provider such as Canna Care Docs.Schedule an appointment or visit our blog to find out where to get a medical marijuana card near Boston. You’ll meet with one of our licensed cannabis doctors, talk to them about your condition(s). Then they’ll determine if medical cannabis is right for you.

If and when you’re approved, we’ll send your certification to you via the state portal. Once you’re certified, you need to register with the state. 

How to register with the state of Massachusetts: 

• You will receive an email from the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission (CCC) when you are certified, with your patient PIN number and instructions on how to register.
• Make sure you have your PIN number, a valid form of ID and a current photo of yourself. If your form of identification is a U.S. passport or military ID, you must also submit proof of MA residency.
• Follow the instructions provided by the state to register on the Medical Use of Marijuana Online System.

How much does a medical cannabis card cost?

What are the benefits of getting a medical marijuana card in Massachusetts?

While recreational cannabis is legal in the state, there are several advantages to being a medical cardholder in MA. If you’re eligible, it’s worth becoming a medical marijuana patient for these great benefits:

1. You’ll save money on taxes.

In aptly nicknamed “Taxachusetts,” recreational marijuana is taxed at 17% (the combined total of excise and state sales tax). Add in your local tax of up to 3%, and you could be paying 20% in sales tax on each trip you make to the dispensary. There’s just one exception to the rule: medical card holders don’t have to pay taxes on their products, saving you a significant amount of money.

2. You can legally possess more cannabis than recreational users.

Recreational users can buy up to one ounce of marijuana, or up to five grams of concentrate. This also applies to possession limits, with one exception: you’re allowed up to 10 ounces of adult-use products in your home. Medical patients, on the other hand, can buy (and possess) up to 10 ounces in a 60-day timeframe.

3. You can grow more marijuana plants at home.

Interested in growing your own cannabis? As a recreational user, you can grow up to six cannabis plants, or up to 12 plants for two or more adults in the household. As a medical patient, you can independently possess a maximum of 12 flowering and 12 vegetative plants in your home. The Cannabis Control Commission states that “You may also apply for a Hardship Cultivation, which allows Registered Qualifying Patients to grow enough marijuana to yield a 60-day supply for personal medical use.”
